- A new ETFtracker resource - Google Finance Comparisons
If you've ever wanted to see what ETFs might be similar to yours and compare their price performance, you'd need to know which ones to look at and then you'd also need tools to do the comparison. We released a new feature that gives you both with our Google Finance Comparisons page here: https://www.etftracker.com.au/google-finance Google Finance provides users with an ability to pick different securities (equities, ETFs) and compare up to 5 of them. It doesn't cover all ASX ETFs (no passive and missing some commodity ones) but it does cover about 150 of them. Of that number we've pulled together around 100 of them into various groups such as Region or ESG or Financial or Technology focused and more. By making these groups its easier for users to see what other ETFs are similar in theme or category to what they're looking at or they might even be starting from scratch and want to search for what different kinds of ESG ETFs there are. Daily prices are one of the things I don't yet have in my ETFtracker app at the moment but coupling the above with the monthly ASX/Chi-X updates on other metrics like ETF net inflows, FUM, spread% and more paints great picture of what's going on in the markets. Coupling this with our holdings analysis tools and ETF investors can also look under the hood with various ETFs. Usage The animation above shows that there is a menu of different groupings users can click on at the top of the page and it takes them directly to that page section. In the section are the ETF tickers and names and we’ve also included images of what the Google Finance price comparison looks like as of the 14th August. The links provide will already have the ETF groups in them so click on those to get the up to date daily results. In Google Finance you can also create your own comparisons but this should help you get you started. You can also CTRL+F to search for a particular ticker if you like. FYI – Because Google Finance only allows for comparisons of 5 securities at a time I’ve had to create multiples of the same thematic like Technology or ESG.

- July 2021 market update on ausbiz
Our July market update for the ETF markets came out yesterday and we got to chat with the folks at ausbiz today. Normally I'd write up a synopsis but they've done a great job here so check out the video and sign up to ausbiz if you've not alread done so - it's free and got awesome market insights: https://www.ausbiz.com.au/media/investors-continue-to-pile-into-the-etf-market?videoId=13364 ausbiz description: The overall ETF market has continued to grow over July, reaching over $116B from just the ASX data. Mark Monfort from New Era Analytics is still awaiting the Chi-X numbers but it is clear that ETFs continue to be popular. The growth of ETFs on the ASX coincides with the 20th anniversary for the funds being traded on the stock exchange. With this current pace of growth it could even reach $140B, with the most popular ETFs on the bourse being equity related funds. Over the last few months the ESG sector of the market has continued to grow. This has been partially driven by the introduction of new funds like EARTH and IESG. But Mark says that some of the ETFs have changed their investment strategy. The mandate change has now turned these funds into ESG ones for investors to trade. It’s not just retail investors, as ESG related funds were the most traded over July, with high volumes and the highest transaction values occurring at the same time. Mark doesn’t believe this trend is likely to slow down. Overall 1-month returns was +0.9% with best categories including Global Property, Infrastructure and Commodity ETFs. Mark says property is seeing a lot of interest, particularly with the international names. Gold also had a good run in July but that may have changed by now says Mark.

Lastly, it was a bumper edition for ETF Prime with a massive podcast. - Holdings Analysis - Which ETFs are covered?
Update 17th September 2021 - Now that we have created the holdings comparison tools we will begin to phase out the individual holdings apps. This will begin with the pausing data refreshes on those. Eventually, the data this will work towards having the holdings data all available in the single ETFtracker tool. Additionally, we had included fixed income ETFs as part of these holdings tools but given the unique naming conventions given to the various bonds being held, it makes for a large degree of difficulty to easily compare them. We are investigating how best to bring htem into the apps in future. To access the apps go to this page: Apps - Holdings. - New way to compare ETFs
We added a new way to compare ETFs in the app over the weekend. Users can see more details under the Guide menu option on this site and the ETF comparisons option - https://www.etftracker.com.au/etf-comparisons. Using this new feature, users can compare ETFs on the same axis to see size differences in performance, inflows and other metrics. Here's an example of that in action: We also used this new feature to do some analysis of healthcare related ETFs as per a viewer request in the ETFtracker forum - check that out here: https://www.etftracker.com.au/forum/general-discussion/thoughts-on-drug
- Exchange Traded Fridays - Issue 2 - 30th July 2021
Welcome to Issue 2 of Exchange Traded Fridays. Interesting week with the Tokyo Olympics under way. Have you guys been watching and what's been your favourite sport? Basketball fan over here so, go Boomers! You can tell the basketballers in the image below, they're mostly the tallest ones in the group. Great to see the Aussie get a couple of wins and I'm not surprised about Team USA losing in the basketball - they're a great bunch of players but they don't work well yet as a team. Maybe there's an analogy there between teams and the pieces that make a strong portfolio? Anyway, back to the markets. It's Friday and here we have a collection of articles, videos, podcasts, data updates and more you might have missed. But don't worry, we got your back. Listen or Watch Before we go further, if you'd prefer to consume all this content in more convenient forms of media, we've launched the Exchange Traded Fridays podcast and it's also on YouTube. Tweet of the week This tweet from James Seyffert looks at all of the bitcoin/crypto related ETFs that have been applied for in the US - there's just a few - https://twitter.com/JSeyff/status/1417969227017957378 Chart of the Week Last week we got the latest data from Chi-X who come out a few days after the ASX with their results. Though not as big as the ASX, they're significant enough to make the $113.5 billion of FUM we saw in the local ETF markets grow to $115.7 billion. That prediction we had of the market getting to $120 billion by the end of 2021 looks pretty safe. - Follow the inflows
Net Inflows are one of the monthly metrics we get from the exchanges (ASX and Chi-X). Typically we see the most money going into equity related ETFs. This makes sense when you consider that as of June 2021, there were 166 equity ETFs and 72 non-equity ones. How those flows moved month to month was mostly the familiars at the top of the pile with Global Equity ETFs taking out the top spot each of the 6 months. Aussie equities ETFs were 2nd up until May and June when flows dropped off. For this first half of 2021, Global Equity ETF inflows totalled $5.2 billion whilst Aussie/Domestic equity ETFs saw $1.6 billion of inflows. If we take out those 2 categories to see the other groups in more detail, Domestic Fixed Income ETFs have the most flows this year at $769 million, Mixed Asset at $716 million and Global Fixed Income after that at $674 million of inflows. Inflows can also lead to outflows and we saw overall outflows in 2021 for Cash and Currency ETFs had net outflows in 2021 totalling $167 million followed by Global Property and Commodities. ETF inflows can be a sign of popularity so can be helpful when you're choosing where to park your money. But, there are areas to plan for growth or get defensive in your portfolio across other categories so make sure you dive into the data to learn more. Happy investing!

Tweet of the week Courtesy of Frank Chaparro - find it here: https://twitter.com/fintechfrank/status/1414348819836375044 Chart of the Week Below we see what the local ETF FUM (Funds Under Management) growth has been year on year when we look at financial year periods, 1 July to 30 June. It's been around the 30% mark the previous 3 years but up to 73% recently. That's been helped by the influx of funds that were able to list their closed-ended FUM amounts straight away (including MGOC, HYGG, LPGD, AASF and others) but even discounting them, growth this year has been much stronger than before. Further ETF Education Ever wondered what the Historical Distribution Yield refers to whne looking at the ETF data from the ASX/Chi-X? We wrote an article with the help of Martin Dinh, Senior Product Manager at the ASX. Check it out here: https://www.etftracker.com.au/post/digging-into-historic-distribution-yields ETFtracker App We have the main ETFtracker App you can access (below) as well as holdings analysis apps for ETFs from iShares, BetaShares and State Street. Sign up is via Facebook, Gmail or Email: https://www.etftracker.com.au/forum YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok We're on a few platforms (some more than others) so look up ETFtracker on your favourite platform for more. Also, if you're not already a subscriber to our YouTube channel, check out an example of one of our videos below. We're also on Instagram and TikTok (for fun) and have a limited Twitter presence too. We are pretty active. Just look up "ETFtracker" on any of those apps and you'll find us. If there's a particular ETF or set of ETFs you want us to review then let us know and we'll add it to the list.
- Digging into Historic Distribution Yields
If you're an ETF holder then you'll know about their distributions. Equities/stocks have dividends that they often provide to investors whereas for ETFs, the basket of equities and other holdings they have will see investors provided with distributions. The monthly data from the ASX showcases distributions in a field called "Historical Distribution Yield". We asked for more detail on how that works and Martin Dinh, Senior Product Manager for the ASX Investment Products team told us a bit more about that. The data comes from IRESS and we see some details here about the methodology Methodology = sum of dividends over the last 12 months from the relevant date /last price for the last business day of the relevant month = historical yearly dividend (%) Using VAS as an example (last share price at 30 June 2021 for VAS was $94.04): So there you have the calculation. We can see that in the data in the ETFtracker app (HERE). In the app there is a Distribution Yield page and you can view this by ETF, ETF Category of ETF Thematic. The chart on the top left shows the average distribution yield per ETF and you can filter to look at a particular month, here is June 2021 for example: The bottom chart shows historic distribution yield each month and we can see the peaks in the month of June when most distributions get paid. Additionally, we comapre the 1-month average total price returns versus the distribution yield With all of the above you can filter for specific ETF types, issuers and other fields to see how these trends play out in those areas so go ahead and check it out. If you're interested, you should check out the podcast Martin does with the ASX called the Ideas Exchange where they have 5 episodes so far with the most recent featuring Emilie O'Neill, Portfolio Manager for eInvest's IMPQ fund.
